We like the way you think.... in teh meantime...

We make no attempt to single out Barry Bonds. Barry just happens to be carrying the steroid banner presently. McGwire, Sosa, Bud Selig etc... all of them are guilty of drinking from the steroid trough. We do indeed protest the steroid era... and the efforts of Bud Selig. Like a good parent... we do not accept the “everybody does it” excuse... the integrity of the game is at stake. We know the asterisk will never be applied but at least we fans will have said to the future fans ... we knew what was going on and we did not stand by and ignore it.

Our asterisk is simply an acknowledgment that we the fans were not ignorant to the truth. Future baseball fans will certainly look back on this time... the steroid era... and they will wonder why no one took a stand and called foul. So this year, we stand up for the past, to show the future, that the now matters. And we will make our stand... in the stands... at the ballpark... for all to see. Our little piece of foam does not attempt to change the record book or right a wrong. That would certainly be beyond our ability and would only add to an already convoluted tangle of words and facts. This little foam asterisk simply allows the fans to demonstrate, in a peaceful simple way, that we were not blind. We were not fooled. And we did not stand by and look the other way while the integrity of the game was ground into the dirt.

A few questions from a blog idiot

How do you keep the spammers from eating you alive? i\'ve seen blogs with nothing but spam postings.

How do you keep some left wing extremist from posting racist or defamatory rhetoric? and if you cant stop them, what are you legally liabel when they do?

can viruses be posted to blogs?

Well ... only got half way through the Monday podcast so far, still not heard a 'sorry, Rich' but I guess I may have missed it. If you've heard it already put me out of my misery and let me know; did he man-up and apologize in the end?

Hi, Matt. Thanks for the feedback.

I thought I'd already posted a (l<em>ong-winded</em>) response to this on my way home Friday evening ... but it ain't here so I guess not - ah the joys of mobile technology. Anyhow here goes with a (<em>shorter</em>) version :)

I guess you're right in saying the money doesn't mean a lot to the owners and that the signing doesn't make the team worse. But I think my issues with the move are two-fold.

Firstly, I just think it's a missed opportunity to move on 'naturally' (maybe even saving face for the sport). It smacks of being the the lazy option rather than bringing in fresh blood to re-energize the club. Also, if they <em>were</em> going to re-sign Bonds then SF could have driven a much harder bargain and used the spare change to top-up the farm system - either with prospects or better quality coaching - investing something for the future rather than feeding the Bondster for another year.

Secondly - and most honestly - I just kind of hoped all along that this deal never would get done, by the Giants or anyone. It just feels wrong to see the record go this way; a travesty. Now the last hope has evaporated and is replaced by disappointment. Now it's just a matter of time before the third of the hallowed records (hits, home runs single season, home runs career) falls into 'tainted' hands. It'll be a sad day for Baseball.

It'd be nice too, just to be able to root for the Giants again.

Cheers,

I think though, for the Giants, the question is: "Why not?" What do they have to lose by signing Bonds for another year? $16 million dollars? Money is pretty much meaningless for your average sports owner nowadays, especially in a huge market like San Francisco. Clubhouse chemistry? Tough to imagine anything worse than when Bonds and Jeff Kent shared the same locker room a few years back. Bad publicity? They've been getting plenty of it from Bonds for years, what's one more year, especially if you can get the attention of a run at a record out of it? You may be on to something with the press causing a clubhouse distraction, and I'm sure it will. However, from a Giants standpoint, they're likely still a few (or more) pieces short of making any kind of legit title run anyway (especially with the ever-improving Dodgers and Padres in their division), so it's likely to not really matter in the grand scheme of things. Any other team would be crazy to sign him and all his baggage, but for the Giants who have been dealing with it for years (and have a fan base which adores him), it's not going to make things much (or any) worse than they already were.

Latest developments on this are that the Redsox confirmed Tuesday, the signing of a $70 million deal for the Dodgers outfielder JD Drew and a $36 million dollar deal for shortstop and lead-off hitter, Julio Lugo.

However, the Manny-trade remains on the 'critical' list with Theo Epstein setting a tenuous Wednesday Midnight deadline. With no club eager to stump-up the sort of quality closer that the Redsox are seeking it looks like Redsox fans will have to content themselves with the ballistics served-up by an 'Ortiz/Ramirez/Drew' power-axis next season.
